Who We Are

Humanitarian Action at IAF

IAF is a leading national humanitarian organization dedicated to fighting poverty in the republic of Kenya. IAF which started working in the Western region of Kenya has gradually expanded its operations in other parts of the country, has more than a decade of experience delivering emergency aid during times of crisis. Our emergency responses focus on the needs of the most vulnerable populations, particularly girls and women. Women and girls are at the heart of IAF’s emergency relief efforts because our experience shows that their gains translate into benefits for families and communities. Essential to IAF’S lifesaving humanitarian work is our commitment to help rebuild safer, stronger places that people call home. Our programs save lives by improving food security and protecting livelihoods; providing life-saving education; increasing access to safe portable water, improving sanitation coverage; promote social justice and open-up economic opportunities that make communities more resilient and less vulnerable to the forces that cause emergencies. In 2017 alone IAF worked in 4 Counties and reached close to 200,000 people around the country. At present, we have mounted several responses to recurrent floods and intermittent conflict, reaching approximately 75,000 people through our emergency programming actions.

IAF Linking Relief, Rehabilitation & Development

All initiatives implemented under our programs follow an approach that entails empowering communities by putting in place policies systems and processes that reduce vulnerabilities to climatic shocks, advanced weather patterns and negative economic trends.

Vision

The vision of IAF is “Peace, Development and Community Empowerment for All” amongst different communities in Kenya. We seek a Country of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and people live in dignity and security. IAF will be a force and a partner of choice within a countrywide movement of actors dedicated to ending poverty. We will be known everywhere for our unshakable commitment to the dignity of people

Strategic Objective

At the heart of IAF’s work is the conviction that interaction between active citizens and a responsive, accountable government are fundamental to achieve the vision of a peaceful and prosperous Kenya where everyone knows and enjoys their rights. IAF believes that it is the Kenyans and national organizations that need to be in the drivers’ seat to shape such a future vision. It is local ownership and participation that will make change effective and sustainable. To achieve this, citizens will need to effectively become agents of change, whether they are represented by Civil Society Organisations or not. Women and youth are critical actors to achieve sustainable change.

More than 4 decades of humanitarian and development assistance in the country raises the question about what change needs to be made to ensure that humanitarian interventions along with development cooperation contribute to change that will break the vicious cycle of protracted crises. This means that IAF will make sure that all projects and programming do not only contribute to survival of people, but also contribute to effectively addressing these root causes and underlying factors. IAF Kenya has identified three closely interconnected key root causes that halt or hamper progress towards peace and prosperity.

  • High levels of poverty
  • Lack of access to basic human rights, especially for women and young people, and
  • Recurring natural disaster and man-made conflicts.

To address these root causes, IAF always analyses the key stakeholders and their influence to block or enable a change.

Learn What we do

Founded in 2005, IAF is a leading humanitarian organization
fighting poverty in the country. IAF places special focus
on working alongside poor girls and women because,
equipped with the proper resources, they have the
power to lift whole families and entire communities
out of poverty. A decade of experience shows that
when you empower a girl or woman, she becomes
a catalyst, creating ripples of positive change that
can lift-up everyone around her.
That's why girls and women are at the heart of
IAF's community-based efforts to improve education,
health and economic opportunity for everyone.
We also work with girls and women to promote social justice,
respond to emergencies and confront hunger and climate change.
Last year IAF worked in 4 Counties and reached 200,000 people
around the Country.
